About Mahale Mountains National Park

Mahale Mountains National Park is one of Tanzania's most remote and pristine wilderness areas, located on the shores of Lake Tanganyika, the world's longest freshwater lake. The park is famous for its chimpanzee trekking experiences, with one of Africa's largest populations of wild chimpanzees (over 1,000 individuals). The dramatic Mahale Mountains rise steeply from the lake shore, creating a breathtaking backdrop. Unlike other parks, Mahale offers the unique combination of primate trekking and beach relaxation in a pristine setting.

Weather & Climate

Tropical climate moderated by lake altitude. Dry season: May-October (24-28°C, comfortable). Wet season: November-April (warmer, more humid, 25-32°C). Rain can make trekking difficult.

Wildlife

Wild chimpanzees (habituated troops of up to 50-60 individuals), red colobus monkey, red-tailed monkey, blue monkey, vervet monkey, bushbuck, bushpig, 350+ bird species including fish eagles and African grey parrots.

Getting There

By air: Charter flights from Dar es Salaam, Arusha, or Kigoma to Mahale airstrip (1-2 hours). Flight to Kigoma from Dar es Salaam (2 hours) then boat transfer (3-4 hours). Park accessed only by boat from Kigoma.

Accommodation

Small number of remote luxury camps located on Lake Tanganyika shore. Options: Greystoke Mahale (most famous), Mahale Mountain Lodge, Kungwe Beach Lodge, Mbali Mbali Mahale. Premium prices reflect remote location and exclusive experience.

Travel Tips

Mahale is remote and expensive but offers a unique, once-in-a-lifetime experience. Best chimpanzee trekking is June-August. Book at least 6-12 months in advance. Pack good hiking boots, insect repellent, and rain gear. Prepare for steep climbs.

Park Fees

Adult Non-Resident: $100 per day (plus conservation fees). Park fees are higher due to remote location and chimpanzee habituation programs.
