About Serengeti National Park

The Serengeti National Park is Tanzania's most famous wildlife sanctuary and one of the Seven Natural Wonders of Africa. Spanning over 14,750 square kilometers, the park is renowned for the annual Great Migration, where over 1.5 million wildebeest and hundreds of thousands of zebras and gazelles cross the plains in search of fresh grazing. The name "Serengeti" comes from the Maasai word "siringet," meaning "endless plains." This UNESCO World Heritage Site offers spectacular year-round game viewing with the highest concentration of large predators in Africa.

Weather & Climate

Temperatures range from 15°C to 27°C (59°F-81°F). Dry season: June-October (cool mornings, warm days). Wet season: November-May (afternoon showers, lush landscapes).

Wildlife

The Big Five: Lion, Leopard, Elephant, Buffalo, Rhino (black). Also: Cheetah, Hyena, Giraffe, Hippo, Crocodile, Baboon, Warthog, Topi, Hartebeest, Eland, Zebra, Wildebeest, Gazelle, 500+ bird species including Ostriches, Secretary Birds, and various eagles.

Getting There

By air: Daily flights from Arusha, Kilimanjaro, Zanzibar, and Dar es Salaam to multiple airstrips within the park (Seronera, Kogatende, Grumeti, Kirawira). By road: 8-9 hours drive from Arusha (335 km) or fly-in safaris recommended.

Accommodation

Luxury tented camps, permanent lodges, and mobile camps available. Stay inside the park for best wildlife access. Popular options: Four Seasons Safari Lodge, Singita, and Serengeti Serena. Book 6-12 months in advance for peak season.

Travel Tips

Pack neutral-colored clothing, layers for temperature changes, quality binoculars, and a good camera. The park is vast - plan to spend at least 3-4 days. Early morning game drives are best for predators. Respect wildlife distance at all times.

Park Fees

Adult Non-Resident: $70 per day (peak season June-October), $60 (low season). Child (5-15 years): $35 per day. Conservation fees apply.
