About Mount Kilimanjaro National Park

Mount Kilimanjaro is Africa's highest mountain and the world's tallest free-standing mountain, rising 5,895 meters (19,341 feet) above sea level. This dormant volcano is one of the Seven Summits and a bucket-list destination for trekkers worldwide. The mountain features five distinct ecological zones from tropical rainforest to alpine desert and arctic summit. Unlike other high peaks, Kilimanjaro requires no technical climbing skills, making it accessible to hikers of varying experience levels. The mountain is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Weather & Climate

Temperature varies by altitude. Base: 20-30°C (68-86°F). Summit: -10°C to -30°C (14°F to -22°F) at night. Rainforest zone receives 1,000-2,000mm annual rainfall. Clearer skies: January-March and August-October.

Wildlife

Blue monkey, black-and-white colobus monkey, bushbuck, elephant (lower slopes), buffalo, leopard (rarely seen), hyrax, 150+ bird species including crowned eagle, Hartlaub's turaco, and scarlet-tufted malachite sunbird.

Getting There

By air: Daily flights from Nairobi or Dar es Salaam to Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO). By road: 1 hour from JRO to Moshi or Arusha. Park gates accessible by vehicle (Marangu Gate, Machame Gate, Londorossi Gate, Rongai Gate).

Accommodation

Mountain huts (Marangu Route) or camping (Machame, Lemosho, Rongai, Shira routes). Park huts available on Marangu Route. Camping equipment provided by tour operators. Luxury options include Kilimanjaro Mountain Resort and Kilimanjaro Coffee Lodge.

Travel Tips

Proper acclimatization is critical - choose longer routes (7-8 days). Hire a reputable tour operator with certified guides and porters. Pack for all seasons. Pole pole (slowly) is the key to success. Train physically before attempting. Travel insurance covering high altitude (above 4,000m) is mandatory.

Park Fees

Adult Non-Resident: $70 per day (peak season June-October and January-February), $60 (low season). Child (5-15 years): $35 per day. Camping/hut fees additional ($50-70 per night). Rescue fees: $20 per person.
