About Tarangire National Park

Tarangire National Park is a hidden gem in northern Tanzania, famous for its massive elephant herds and iconic baobab trees. The park derives its name from the Tarangire River that flows through it, attracting thousands of animals during the dry season. With one of the highest concentrations of wildlife outside the Serengeti, Tarangire offers excellent game viewing with fewer crowds. The park is particularly known for its huge elephant families (often 300+ individuals) and stunning landscapes dotted with ancient baobabs.

Temperatures: 20-30°C (68-86°F). Dry season: June-October (cool mornings, warm days). Wet season: November-May (afternoon showers, lush landscapes, lower visibility).

Wildlife

Elephant (largest concentration in Tanzania), Giraffe (high density), Buffalo, Lion, Leopard, Cheetah, Hyena, Zebra, Wildebeest, Hartebeest, Oryx, Eland, Waterbuck, Impala, Dik-dik, 550+ bird species including endemic ashy starling.

Getting There

By road: 2-3 hours from Arusha (118 km) via surfaced road to the park entrance. By air: Scheduled flights from Arusha, Zanzibar, and Dar es Salaam to Kuro Airstrip, Manyara Airstrip, or other seasonal airstrips within the park.

Accommodation

Luxury tented camps, permanent lodges, and budget campsites inside and outside the park. Popular options: Tarangire Treetops, Oliver's Camp (luxury), Swala Camp, Maramboi Tented Camp, Tarangire Safari Lodge. Book in advance for June-October.

Travel Tips

The park is excellent for a full day game drive. Best elephant viewing during dry season (June-October) when they gather at Tarangire River. Less crowded than Serengeti - consider combining for a varied experience. Baobab trees are photographically best during sunrise and sunset.
